(macros/programs) historical? check knuth articles against digital typography Volume 1 (1980) --- D. Walden The first issue of TUGboat was is dated October 1980 and, thus, there only one issue in the first volume (Volume 1, Number 1, tb01) consisting of 35 pages, with a 12 page appendix on ``An Indexing Facility for \TeX'', by Terry Winograd and Bill Paxton. A number of pages of the issue discuss the formation of TUG and TUGboat, introduce \TeX\ and \MF, discuss publication in \TeX, provide status reports from various groups beginning to use \TeX, report on \TeX's implementation progress. Recommended reprint: AMS-\TeX: ``A Very Friendly Product'' by Michael Spivak, the earliest \TUB\ paper on this very important \TeX\ capability. Volume 2 (1981) -- KB Feb 1981 (tb02, ~139 pages) - - my master's advisor Bob Morris from UMB has a note on TeX support - fuchs introduces tfm format - an early "format" arktex by arthur keller - list macros by lynne price July 1981 (tb03, ~60 pages) - - fuchs introduces dvi format - liang introduces hyphenation algorithm - early attempts at metafont November 1981 (tb04, ~75 pages) - - initial treasurer's (13k income) - knuth letter on tex82 release and web - fuchs introduces pxl format - bb on tugboat production - michael sanella on formatting a book with tex all issues have lots of site reports, driver reports, implementation problems. overall best: Knuth's original letter about tex82 and .web seems of the most historical interest. [tb04gendel] font best: tfm format remains crucial to the tex world and essentially unchanged. [tb02fuchstfm] macro best: price on list macros, I guess. [tb02pricelist] non-math: sanella [tb04sann] Volume 3 (1982) --- KB The third volume of \TUB\ contained two issues (March and October 1982, tb05 and tb06), 90 pages total. Implementation remains the paramount concern on the software side, including problems with tape formats. The second issue has an early note from Leslie Lamport on \TeX\ macro programming, and an ``Introduction to \TeX\ and TUG'' by Ron Whitney; although \TeX\ is not compiled in \acro{SAIL} any longer, it's still quite astonishing how much of the \TeX\ process described there is still absolutely valid. Reprint: ``Fixed-point glue setting'' by Donald Knuth, ~10p (can be squeezed). It's a small web program that can replace use of floating-point in \t{tex.web}; it will probably do more than anything else to give the flavor of what the \TeX\ and \MF\ programs are actually like. CHECKME: I think the code was actually adapted into some version of TeX, but can't recall for sure. Volume 4 (1983) --- D. Walden The fourth volume of \TUB\ contained two issues (April and September 1983, tb07 and tb08) and 132 pages altogether. The contents of this volume continue to deal primarily with early implementation issues, both of \TeX\ itself and at new user sites as well as sharing insights about how to do various tasks in \TeX\ and \MF. Issue 2 of the volume had two long pieces. One was a 23 page summary of \AMSTeX\ by Michael Spivak. The other was a 21 page collection of notes by several individuals debating the benefits and liabilities of a (then) typical special purpose computer typesetting program versus \TeX; this is worth looking up (pages 81-102) to contemplate how the predictions of the various individuals worked out. Recommended reprint: ``News from the \TeX\ Project'' by David Fuchs, which is representative of the state of \TeX\ circa 1983. Volume 5 (1984) -- KB May 1984 (tb09, ~70 pages) - - Knuth, TeX incunabala (with figures) - financial report (1982=60k in, 27k out; 1983=65k in, 58k out) - metafont gf format - gkm tobin, oclc fonts in metafont - susan daniels, hp tex macros Nov 1984 (tb10, ~96 pages) - - president mackay - on becoming a *users'* group, with tex becoming stable - southall - typographic design - desarmien - french support - schulze - german support - knuth - metafont course - hobby/guoan - chinese meta-font overall best: incunabala [tb09knut] or southall [tb10south] font best: tobin [tb09tobin] non-math: southall Volume 6 (1985) --- KB Three issues: March (52p), July (56p), November (62p) = 170pp. March: corrections for Southall's typographic article in 5(3), include if that turns out to be the reprint; Eppstein on (plain) trees; Knuth on fractions and recipes. July: first serious multilingual tex (michael ferguson), Hendrickson on (plain) diagonal lines, financial report -- very low membership dues (12-15k), but huge (60k) profit on meetings and courses. Hmm. Nov: TUG plan to incorporate; revised cyrillic fonts; latex 2.09 announcement from lamport. Reprint: Knuth on fractions, for fun? Volume 7 (1986) --- D. Walden There were three issues in \TUB\ volume 7 (March, June, and October). The March issue was an example of how \TeX\ might be used by a professional graphics designer to create a journal design. The contents of this issue were primarily about the nuts-and-bolts of operating \TeX: using Tangle and Weave, output devices, previewers, and reports of \TeX\ being brought up at various sites and on various computers. Among other news and announcements from the \TeX\ world, The June issue particularly noted the publication of Knuth's five volume \emph{Computers and Typesetting}, a landmark event. \LaTeX\ was a substantial topic in the October issue, and two papers on fonts had lasting impact. One was John Sauter's introduction to his process for creating Computer Modern fonts for his VAX/VMS operating system. The other is our reprint for from this volume. Recommended reprint: ``Notes on typeface protection'' by Charles Bigelow.
