The TeX Users Group (TUG) hassponsored several explicitly practical ("how you get things done") TeXconferences. The firstconference was held in New York City in 1998 and was well-receivedby attendees. The secondconference took place in San Francisco in 2004, and thethird in Chapel Hill in 2005.As an outgrowth of the second conference TUG decided tocreate an online journal for practical TeX.
A typical issue of The PracTeX Journal may include:
- articles on projects or activities accomplished through the use of TeX
- short articles about problems that were resolved through the use of TeX or problemswith TeX that were resolved
- a write-up on how to use a useful LaTeX package
- a column by a guest columnist
- questions answered by a guest expert
- a column for beginners
- relevant announcements
This journal, as you see it here, will undoubtedly evolve in style as well as content. TheEditorial Board welcomes suggestions forimproving both the content and appearance of the journal. The PracTeX Journal is a complement to TUG's primary print journal, TUGboat. TUGboat is a benefit of membership in the TeX Users Group. The TeX Live, ProTeXt and CTANsoftware (on CD and DVD) are other benefits of joiningTUG.
A note from Robin Laakso, TUG Executive Director
It seems fitting that the launch of this on-line journal is takingplace in 2005, as this year marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of TUG!What more could this not-for-profit organization desire for its SilverAnniversary than to keep inventing new ways to provide informationabout TeX, LaTeX and friends for its membership and for usersworldwide. Thanks to the all-volunteer Editorial Board we are on-taskand quite proud to introduce the PracTeX Journal this special year.
TUG is a member-supported organization and relies on memberships and donations for itsexistence. We also have institutional memberships for universities andcompanies. If I can be of assistance with these or other mattersplease feel free to contact me.
