In 1983 I started to write my PhD thesis in Physics at Imperial College, London. My concern was the quality of the output, especially for math formulae. Someone at the computer center mentioned a new program which was `mathematically intelligent'. This struck a nerve, and I bought `TeX and MetaFont' from the book shop. I was hooked on it after studying it for a few minutes. I eventually managed to write my thesis in TeX but, before the advent of personal computers, laser printers and screen previewers, it took some determination!
Some 20 years later, I am co-director of River Valley Technologies, which is firmly based around TeX. Thank you Don -- TeX has been good to me!
